Scientists at University College London and the University of California, Los Angeles, carried out research in which people viewed different images (‘Thoughts Read via Brain Scans’, 7 August 2005). The researchers used a functional magnetic imaging scanner to detect, successfully, when people’s attention was focused on different images. In other words, a thought of the people in the study could be read.
