Pronunciation and Phonetics

Audio Material

This page contains sound recordings of various items from Pronunciation and Phonetics: A Practical Guide for English Language Teachers.

Some are spoken by a Standard Southern British English (SSBE) speaker, some by a General American (GenAm) speaker, and some by both. The recordings relate to Section I of the book (Phonetics) only, not to Section II (Pronunciation Teaching) or Section III (Sample Exercises). The reason recordings of the sample exercises are not provided is because the pronunciation of the items in this section should be clear by then, if you have understood the first two sections. In any case, if you are not a native speaker of English, it is an opportunity to ask a native speaker to pronounce items, in order to be sure. If that person is a native speaker, but not of SSBE or GenAm, this is an opportunity to discover differences between accents of English (see chapter 13).
