Directions for use of Audio Tracks

This companion website has been constructed to supplement the book Understanding and Crafting the Mix: The Art of Recording by William Moylan.

Following are a core set of tracks to illustrate many key concepts of the book.  The reader has been referred to this website by references to these tracks that appear throughout the text.

Circled text boxes are found throughout the book, and identify specific tracks to hear and the purpose for listening activity.

The uncompressed audio files on the website are the sole intended versions for use in understanding the concepts under discussion.

It is imperative the reader download these uncompressed WAV files for use in listening exercises. Compressed MP3 files are present only to allow the reader the option of auditioning a track before downloading the larger, uncompressed file. The compressed files have altered or eliminated some of the content of the material that is being discussed.  This makes them unusable for study and a complete understanding the material.

The compressed files could make for advanced listening exercises though.  They might be compared to the uncompressed files to learn to recognize the subtle sound-quality differences created by compression.

The many recorded examples on this website will assist in developing important listening skills, and some tracks will present dimensions of recorded sound in ways that are more easily recognized than in many commercial recordings. The reader will often want to listen to tracks while reading specific sections in the text; these tracks are meant to clarify materials and make some of the more abstract concepts much more tangible.
