Science as an institution is not very inclusive. While it is getting much better, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure that the valuable perspectives of people who have been historically excluded from the practice of science are paid attention to. In this video, we’ll talk about a few interrelated ideas about who participates in science, who historically and even still today gets excluded from science, and what kind of impact that has on what we know. We also discuss participatory research methods, like citizen science and community-based research, as ways of broadening who participates in scientific research. This video is aligned with Chapter 13 of the book Recipes for Science: An Introduction to Scientific Methods and Reasoning, by Angela Potochnik, Matteo Colombo, and Cory Wright.
