Chapter 13: Photon Beam Treatment Planning: Part II

An essential part of the nomenclature in radiation oncology is the terminology used for volumes of interest, specifically, regions of interest (ROIs) on volumetric imaging (typically CT and/or MRI) for use in treatment planning. One standard reference for this is the reports from the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU), namely, ICRU Report No. 50 (Allisy et al. 1993), ICRU Report No. 62 (Allisy et al. 1999), and the most recent update ICRU Report No. 83 (Gregoire et al. 2010). These reports define and describe the target and critical structure volumes used in treatment planning and provide a basis for comparing and evaluating treatment outcomes.
