Using paraphilia disorders as an example can lead to discussion as to what is considered mental illness based on something that is considered deviant—but not necessarily as mentally illness—by a large portion of society. Overall, this can speak to the subjectivity of mental health, and the control and power psychiatry and medicine in general have over individuals—as seemingly “normal” individuals could be diagnosed as “sick.”
