german grammar

second edition

Welcome to the companion website for Essential German Grammar, Second Edition!

We are proud to offer you a wealth of resources designed to aid and support students and instructors in their German language learning and teaching. These include additional interactive exercises, flashcards, PowerPoint slides and downloadable exercises.

The website is divided into two sections:

Students’ Resources

The interactive exercises cover all the main areas of German grammar. Accessibly organized by chapters, sub-chapters and topics, these varied and interactive exercises will be invaluable for helping students to develop a strong knowledge of grammar through guided practice. Within a sub-chapter, the exercises are normally graded, with the later ones being more challenging, which will help to motivate progressive learning. Although mainly designed for study, the exercises can also be used to accompany instructed grammar courses.

The accessible flashcards give students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with key grammatical terms.

Instructors’ Resources

The PowerPoint slides have been specifically designed for classroom use by instructors. These cover the main areas of grammar, include examples, and can be easily adapted by teachers to meet their own students’ needs. They can also be used by self-learners.

Instructors will also find downloadable PDF exercise sheets. These exercises cover the main chapters in Essential German Grammar Second Edition and could be used as classroom hand-outs, homework assignments or practice tools for revision.

We hope that you will enjoy these resources!

Viel Spaß und alles Gute,

Martin Durrell, Katrin Kohl and Claudia Kaiser.

Here now is finally a German grammar that stands out from the crowd: modern, pleasing on the eye and bursting with self-correcting exercises, backed up by a complementary website to make it a book of its era. The ideal grammar to work through prior to taking on the ultimate reference work on the topic, Martin Durrell's Hammer's German Grammar and Usage.

Essential German Grammar is exceptionally straightforward to use, full of useful exercises and examples and written with an eye for salient detail. I would recommend it confidently to students at A level and beyond. It is not just a valuable source of information; the book also explains cogently why you can't just 'do without' grammatical knowledge. It will help learners appreciate that, far from an inconvenience, the striving for a mastery of grammar is absolutely central to successful advanced language learning.
