This section of the website presents a unique look behind the scenes in newsrooms across the UK. Each Newsday is a snapshot, a moment in time capturing what happened on a particular shift in a particular organisation. Working practices vary hugely across the industry. Here we give you a chance to experience what happens in different workplaces, how decisions are made about what goes on air, and how producers and presenters cope with breaking stories.

We are grateful to the organisations who let us behind closed doors. There were no ‘no-go’ areas and nothing we perceived as ‘spin’ – just busy people getting on with their work. The opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the organisations people work for, though every workplace has its own ethos and we found that successful newsrooms have a strong sense of team spirit. Almost without exception, none of the people we feature would be where they are without dedication and a love of the job.
