About the Author: Ken Kobré

Ken Kobré is Professor Emeritus at San Francisco State University where he headed the photo and videojournalism program for 30 years. Kobré has been producing documentaries for broadcast outlets and NGOs for 22 years. His documentaries have been broadcast on PBS in KQED, San Francisco; WNET New York; WLIW, Long Island; PBS WorldCompass, NY; SBS in Australia; al-Hurra, Israel; RMC France; France 5; Kunskapskanalen (The Knowledge Channel), Sweden. His documentaries have been screened at the Corcoran gallery in Washington, DC; Frontline Club in London; Red House in Sophia, Bulgaria; and Visa Pour L'image in Perpignan, France.

Kobre’s textbook Photojournalism: The Professionals' Approach, published by Focal Press-Routledge, is in its 7th edition and has been the widest-selling text on photojournalism in the world since 1980.

Kobre has worked as a photojournalist and one-man-band video documentarian in developing countries including Malaysia, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Malawi He has conducted numerous workshops including in Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Slovenia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Kobré is also a past winner of the Robin F. Garland Educator Award and the Sprague Award from the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and for four years directed the University of Missouri/NPPA Pictures of the Year Awards.

He has been practicing what he teaches by been working as a one-man band producer/director since 2001.
