Suitable Software Applications

Audio Playback and Analysis

The AIFF audio files provided in the "Audio Examples" section of this website should play back with most standard audio/media software. However, Windows Media Player can sometimes fail to work with that file format. A suitable alternative is audio editor/analysis software as described below.

Amadeus Pro is a very good audio editor/analysis application for Apple OS X.

Audacity is an alternative to Amadeus Pro. It is free and is available for a number of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows. However, it is not as sophisticated as Amadeus Pro.

Audio Process Development

Audio Processes: Musical Analysis, Modification, Synthesis, and Control describes audio process designs that can be implemented in a wide range of programming languages and environments. Choosing software for learning about audio processes and developing new software depends on a number of criteria. The available hardware and operating system, personal programming experience, and the type of process being considered all play a part.

The patches in the "Programming Examples" section of this website are based on the Max programming environment. Max is good for quickly prototyping audio processes, and also has a downloadable SDK (Software Development Kit) which enables the creation of new objects in C.

There are many alternatives to using Max for implementing audio processes. Some to consider are as follows:
