Welcome!

Welcome to the Companion Website for Joseph H. Lynch and Phillip C. Adamo, The Medieval Church: A Brief History, 2nd ed., (Routledge, 2013). Here you will find primary sources to accompany the book, including audio sources from The Rose Ensemble, and a guide on how to interpret primary sources.

Each primary source is numbered according to its corresponding chapter and relative position in that chapter. For example, Source 2.1 is the first primary source for Chapter 2. This reader was created by Andrew Fox and Aidan Nancarrow, undergraduates at Augsburg College, who collected and edited the sources, and composed study questions for them, under the supervision of Phillip C. Adamo, Associate Professor of History and Director of Medieval Studies at Augsburg.  Partial funding for this work came from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunities at Augsburg College.

For legal reasons, the texts in this collection were chosen because they are out of copyright. Because the language of older translations can seem awkward to contemporary readers, all of the texts have been slightly modified, with the hope of making them more accessible. Also for reasons of copyright, the collection contains renderings of medieval images, rather than photographs of the originals. In all cases, we encourage student to track down the more recent translations and original images, which should be easy enough to find on line.

Best wishes,

Phillip C. Adamo
