Key Terms

Aggression: forms of behaviour that are deliberately intended to harm or injure someone else.

Reactive aggression: forms of aggressive behaviour triggered by the anger created by a perceived provocation; also described as hot-tempered aggression.

Proactive aggression: forms of aggressive behaviour planned in advance to achieve some goal; also described as cold-tempered aggression.

Weapons effect: an increase in aggression produced by the sight of a weapon (e.g., gun).

Hostile expectation bias: the bias to expect aggression from others in ambiguous situations.

Coercive cycle: a pattern of behaviour within families in which aggression by one family member produces an aggressive response that leads to an escalation in aggression.

Testosterone: a hormone present in much greater quantities in males than in females; it has been linked to aggressive and sexual behaviour.
