Archival Resources and Links:

  • Large commercial stock footage repositories such as Getty Images dominate archival film. Smaller organizations like Pond 5 may offer a less expensive alternative.
  • The Internet Archive houses the Rick Prelinger Archives, as well as a broad variety of film, audio, and text based materials, and is free.
  • Other collections such as Critical Past are royalty free, with cost to download based on quality.
  • In the US there are two main government collections: www.archives.gov/, which has a lot of material available online, and The Library of Congress, which features several digital collections of maps, photos, and documents, as well as audiovisual material.
  • The British Film Institute also has a variety of collections.
  • Several film producers have started making material available on YouTube. In addition to the BFI channel you'll find Mosfilm, and British Pathé.
  • Mosfilm YouTube Channel of Soviet Films

  • Regional collections can also be helpful, such as this archive of Northern Ireland Film Commission material.
  • Or other national collections, such as the Swedish Nation Film Archive.
  • Film Archives Online, is a collaboration of 18 archives, focused on non-fictional materials from all over Europe.
  • Flicker Commons has become the home for a wide variety of photographs, both historical and contemporary.

  • For filmmakers who see the creative space as a shared one, there are several alternatives to copyright.
  • See in particular the organization Creative Commons: Fair Use—Another useful link when dealing with "fair use" of copyrighted material in the US is The Center for Social Media and Impact (CSMI).
