Jazz

The term jazz encompasses a great variety of styles that have flourished in the United States and abroad since the late nineteenth century, particularly during the so-called Swing Era, between 1935 and 1946. Many of the most prominent popular world-music genres, including highlife (Ghana), salsa (Cuba-Puerto Rico-New York), bossa nova (Brazil), Calypso (Trinidad), Afrobeat (Nigeria), klezmer (Eastern Europe), among many others, have been influenced by jazz music. Jazz itself is in many ways a popular world music in that it blends musical traits from Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the United States into a unique style.
