Personality disorders are defined in the DSM as “an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment” (DSM-5, American Psychological Association, 2013, p. 645). DSM-5 includes 10 personality disorders, organized into three clusters: (a) paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal (the odd-eccentric cluster); (b) antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic (dramatic-emotional-erratic cluster); and (c) avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive (anxious-fearful cluster). Borderline personality disorder is the most common personality disorder, while anti-social personality disorder is said to be the hardest to treat.
