Externalizing disorders involve disorders of behaviors that are under-controlled, such as hyperactive, disruptive, delinquent, and aggressive behaviors. The disorders that fall under this category are attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder. Adolescents with these disorders cause problems to those around them and are at risk of a variety of other problems such as depression, academic difficulty, and substance use. ADHD involves problems with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.  There are three subtypes of ADHD, the predominantly inattentive type, the predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, and the combined type. The combined subtype is the most common. ODD and conduct disorder are both associated with behaviors that violate the rights of others. ODD involves angry and defiant behaviors, while conduct disorder involves anti-social and aggressive behaviors. Conduct disorder is more severe than ODD and many adolescents with ODD often progress into conduct disorder. There are a variety of treatments for ADHD, ODD, and conduct disorder, such as medication and therapy. The most popular medications for treatment of these disorders are stimulant medications. Therapeutic approaches often involve attempting to change the adolescent’s behavior in a variety of settings by training teachers and parents how to better respond to the behaviors.
