Somatic symptoms, complaints, and concerns are very common in the general population. Several different categories of somatic and related disorders exist. These include somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder, conversion disorder, and factitious disorder. These disorders are highly costly to the medical system because individuals who suffer from them engage in considerable unnecessary use of medical services. Relative to other DSM disorders, we know relatively little about the etiology and treatment of somatic disorders.
