Internalizing disorders are disorders that, compared with externalizing disorders, are less observable to an outside person. Broadly, they include anxiety and mood disorders. There are several types of anxiety disorders: separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and social phobia. Separation anxiety disorder involves anxiety associated with separation from a caregiver. Generalized anxiety disorder involves uncontrollable worry about a wide variety of topics. Specific phobia involves anxiety around a feared stimulus. Social phobia involves fear of negative evaluation from others. Depressive disorders are disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder involves chronic irritability; major depressive disorder involves sad mood that interferes with daily activities and/or a loss of pleasure in previously pleasurable activities among other symptoms; persistent depressive disorder is a chronic, milder form of major depressive disorder; and premenstrual dysphonic disorder involves extreme labiality in mood a week before a menstrual cycle. There is strong support for cognitive behavior therapy as a treatment for both anxiety and mood disorders. Girls are generally more likely to report and to be diagnosed with anxiety and mood disorders.
